Abstract

Platform-based markets have become increasingly prevalent today. Platform ecosystems are characterized by a competition tension between platform owners and complementors(e.g.. third-party service providers). In this seminar. we present findings from two studies of global digital platforms: JD.com and Amazon. In our first study on JD.com,we examine performance differences between the platform owner and third-party complementors, and evaluate different strategies third-party complementors can take to close the performance gap. In our second study on Amazon, we examine entry mode strategies for digital platform owners to enter complementary markets. The two studies provide new insights on the competition dynamics in global digital platforms。
